Think outside the (Gift) Box: Two Great Ways to Gift by Giving Back

Tired of getting your friends and family the same boring gifts year after year? This year, why not think outside the gift box. Give them a gift they can enjoy while knowing that you’re also giving back to our community in the process.

This season, the POP Project asks you to consider these two great ways to gift by giving back.

1. Earn Incentives through the Give!Local Fundraising Program

Give!Local Asheville logoGive!Local Asheville is Mountain Xpress’ online fundraising initiative benefiting 47 local nonprofits through micro-donations and exposure, including the POP Project. But nonprofits aren’t the only one reaping rewards. As a donor, you’ll be getting some great swag, too, which you can pass along as holiday gifts. At the first of the year, you’ll receive a coupon book, any incentives specific to the nonprofits you supported, and (fingers crossed!) one of the Big Give Day grand prizes.

Giving back while getting in return? Sounds like a win-win to us!

The POP Project has a Give!Local fundraising goal of $1,500 by December 31. We’re currently at $65 raised, or 4%, of that goal.

2. Take Them to a Holiday Dinner They Won’t Forget!

A Holiday Dinner to Benefit the POP ProjectJoin us at Rhubarb’s event space in downtown Asheville on Monday, December 12 for beer and appetizers, followed by a four-course dinner and beer pairing prepared by four-time James Beard Award-nominated Chef John Fleer. POP is partnering with Rhubarb, Catawba Brewing, and Gaining Ground Farm to offer this exclusive holiday meal. A portion of every ticket sale supports our mission to provide better access to books for people in our community.

Seating is very limited—only 60 seats are available. Purchase your tickets early!

Why Giving Back Makes a Great Gift

The POP Project finds new homes for used books, but our mission scope is much larger. POP spreads the powers of literacy throughout the community by providing a greater access to books for people who need it most.

From early start programs and low-income neighborhoods to day shelters for the homeless, POP works alongside other local agencies to bring our mission to fruition, such as the Free Community Meal Market in Candler. Here’s what Jan Ianniello, the market’s coordinator has to say about POP’s impact on their mission:

Have no doubt your work and wonderful books are changing lives. Today, a mom brought her autistic son to the market…. I asked this disconnected boy if he liked books, and he quickly nodded and made eye contact. Mom plopped down beside him and they carefully examined the books and selected the ones he liked. He left with a smile on his face—and a big smile on Mom’s face. His first trip into our church and to the market was a success!

This mom works hard and struggles to meet daily needs. These new books for her child were a wonderful gift! Thank you!

There are strong documented correlations between access to books, long-term literacy levels, educational and professional success, and susceptibility to entering the corrections system. Simply put, reading is power. And the POP Project’s mission is to give power every member of our community so they have the opportunity to thrive.

Give the Gift of Giving Back!

Please help sustain POP through 2017 by making your donation today! If just 50 people gave $30 or bought a dinner ticket, we could reach our goal.
