The POP Project: About Us

Our History

The POP Project is an Asheville-based nonprofit working to spread the power and possibilities of literacy. POP was founded in 2009 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit with a mission to bring books to those who could not get to them otherwise.

Since then, POP has expanded to offer books to all segments of the local and regional population within communities in Western North Carolina and across the Southeast. Our main focus is to further the cause of literacy and all the wonderful opportunities that it provides. We believe that making books available to everyone, especially from a young age, enables people to become more involved citizens, stay better informed, and lead more successful and fulfilled lives.

To date, the POP Project has donated more than $300,000 worth of books to community organizations, schools, and detention centers in Buncombe County, North Carolina, additional counties around Western North Carolina, and maximum security prisons in five states across the Southeast.

The POP Project: Our Mission

Our Mission

The POP Project is an Asheville, NC-based 501(c)3 nonprofit working to spread the power and possibilities of literacy through greater access to books.

We recognize the strong correlations between access to books, long-term literacy levels, educational and professional success, and susceptibility to entering the corrections system. POP works with other literacy and advocacy agents in Western North Carolina to improve every community member’s access to books, and ultimately their ability to succeed.

The POP Project will continue to grow and evolve without losing sight of our main goal: to make sure no book goes without a home, goes unread, or sits on a shelf and collects dust, and that all of the books we are entrusted with are used for constructive, personal expansion.

At the POP Project, we understand that literacy is the key to facing the challenges of the future.
