Do you love books and want to make sure others have access to great literary resources?

The POP Project needs volunteers and supporters like you to help with these five projects:

1. Homeward Books, Monthly Book Sorting

Much of the “manpower” that POP needs involves flipping through book donations, sorting books into categories, and then re-boxing them at our storage unit. The only skills needed for that are the ability to read book jackets and patience.

Please consider volunteering your time this spring on one of the following dates:

  • Saturday, March 14 (SPOTS FILLED)
  • Saturday, April 11
  • Saturday, May 9
  • Saturday, June 13

Each volunteer opportunity will be at POP’s outside storage unit at Stow-A-Way Storage in West Asheville from 10:30am-noon. Registration for the March date is currently full. Future dates will be posted soon to Hands On’s website, or you can contact POP directly to register early.

2. Make Book Deliveries

Delivering books is what we do, and you can help, too! We have established relationships with organizations and centers in Asheville and around WNC who accept regular donations from us. Just a few minutes of your time can make a big difference to the agencies and recipients of the books. Locations range from Buncombe, Henderson, and Madison Counties, so you can still help even if you don’t live in town.

3. Suggest New Agencies

We currently have a surplus of adult fiction and nonfiction books in need of new homes. But if we had our way, we’d need much less space because the books would be given out. Click here to take a look through our list of book categories. Let us know which agencies or organizations in Asheville, Buncombe County, or Western North Carolina would benefit from a greater access to these books.

4. Become a Donation Manager

The POP Project needs an enthusiastic volunteer to organize our donations of adult-level reading books and manage our local distributions. We need someone with a flare for organizing and who is comfortable communicating professionally with other community organizations regarding their needs, scheduling deliveries, doing minor administrative tasks.

The schedule would be part-time and extremely flexible. If you’re self motivated and looking for a long-term volunteer position that you can mold to your needs, then this is the volunteer position for you!

5. Research and Write Grants

The POP Project donates roughly $10 in books for every dollar in our budget. Help POP grow in size and scope. We’re interested in securing grants ranging from small local ones all the way up. If you are a certified or experienced grant writer, please contact us about our commission policies.
