We’ve Been Good this Year — Please Add POP to Your Gift List!

With less than 10 days until Christmas, it’s time to check your list twice. You’ve got that train set your nephew asked for. And you finally found something you think the in-laws will like. What else is left to do before Christmas morning?

Do you have the POP Project on your gift list? We’ve been very good this year. We’ve given over 6,000 books to men, women, and children in our community since January 1. Help us by giving a gift to POP in return.

The POP Project is currently undergoing a fundraising campaign to raise $3,500 by December 31. We have currently raised $487, or 14%, of that goal.

Why our Mission Matters

There are strong documented correlations between access to books, long-term literacy levels, educational and professional success, and susceptibility to entering the corrections system. Simply put, READING IS POWER.

From early start programs to retirement communities, and low-income neighborhoods to the homeless, the POP Project is there to give books to all. Here’s what Heather Merritt, Title 1 Coordinator at Pisgah Elementary School, has to say about POP’s impact on young readers in our community:

Pisgah Elementary has a used bookstore where students can trade books or spend their Pisgah Pride tickets they have earned for good behavior. The bookstore, run by 5th graders, is open twice a week and is always crowded with ‘customers’. Several of our regular customers have been students who have struggled to learn to read and don’t have the finances to buy new books. Without the supply of these books by the POP Project, we could not make this program run.

Why Donate

  • The Need is Great! — Around 1 in 10 adults in Buncombe County cannot read at a basic level and 24% of children are living in poverty. Providing a greater access to books improves literacy, which in turn boosts self esteem, improves economic autonomy, and allows individuals to better contribute to the workforce of their community.
  • The Secret to our Success is YOU! — More than 80% of POP’s funding in 2013 came from private donations. The POP Project receives no grants or public funds, so our whole budget depends on people like you who give individually or via our fundraisers.
  • Every Dollar is Important! — Every dollar donated to POP translates to around $10 worth of books given out in Buncombe County and Western North Carolina. What other expense generates that kind of return? With your donation, you can know exactly the impact your donation has made to our community.
