Spots Available for POP’s MLK Day of Service Project

servlet.ImageServerPeople of all ages, all over our great nation, will be calling Monday, January 21 a Day On, not a day off. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service commemorates the spirit of Reverend King through service projects designed to strengthen communities, empower individuals, create civic connections.

For 2013, the POP Project and our volunteer team will be putting together a sizable book donation for Haywood Street Congregation, an inclusive worship center in downtown Asheville. Volunteers will spend a relaxed evening sorting, counting, and packaging boxes of books to be donated to the congregation’s community library.

Interested in joining the POP volunteer team? Our book sorting session is Monday, January 21 from 5:30-7:00 PM. Sign up on the Hands On website, or email apopproject@gmail.com.

Want to participate, but not sure if this project is for you? Hands On is coordinating a special intergenerational service event with Land of Sky Regional Council Senior Corps. The event will include multiple stations where volunteers can participate in projects that directly support local nonprofits, including the POP Project. Check out their site for more info.

Haywood Street Congregation also offers homeless services and a clothing closet to people within the Asheville community. Their Welcome Table, a regular Wednesday lunch, is open to people of all faiths and demographics who wish to share a meal together.
