Celebrate Zelda Fitzgerald this Weekend in Asheville!

On Saturday, March 10, 2018, the City of Asheville will mark Asheville’s third annual Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald Day, with festivities around town. Celebrate Zelda! events run all week, from Friday, March 9 through the following Friday, March 16. The POP Project is excited to be a recipient of books collected at several of the events.

Here is a schedule for the week:

FRIDAY, MARCH 9

12:00pm – Art Break, exploring the life and art of Zelda Fitzgerald. Free.

Location: Asheville Art Museum, 175 Biltmore Avenue.

5:00–8:00pm – Zelda IPA Small Batch Release: Asheville Brewing Company will release this cocktail-inspired IPA brewed with juniper berries and lime peel at both the downtown and north Asheville brewpubs. It will also be on tap at Zelda’s Cocktail Party (see below).

6:00–7:30pm – “We Sing of Peace”: Exploring Emotional Stability, Health, and Wellness through Song, with Asher Leigh. This group is welcome to anyone who is seeking a safe place to explore their feelings through music. No formal singing experience necessary.

SATURDAY, MARCH 10

10:30am–3:00pm – Zelda’s Flowers: Painting and Drawing Workshop with co-instructors Pamela Lanza and Glenn Hirsch.

11:00am–5:00pm – Art Opening, Aurora Studio & Gallery. Aurora Studio offers supportive art workshops for artists who have been affected by mental health issues, addiction or homelessness.

7:00–10:00pm – ZELDA’S COCKTAIL PARTY: A ROARING 20’S EVENING. Come decked out in 20’s period apparel, listen to the jazzy sounds of the Millie Palmer Trio, and enjoy a classic Prohibition cocktail. Prizes awarded the for best costume!

6:00–7:30pm – Highland Hospital: Practices, Treatment, and Mental Health: discussion hosted by Dr. Daniel Johnson, MD, who will offer a presentation on the psychiatric practices that took place at Highland Hospital

FRIDAY, MARCH 16

6:00pm – Zelda Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age Literary Karaoke, with readings by Tom Downing, Michael Crosa, and Allison Stinson. Come read published works by Zelda or writers of that era for 3–5 minutes.

7:00–8:30pm – Celebrating the Birthdays of Dead Writers: Monika Gross of At-A-Site Theater will be offering intimate one-to-one readings of Zelda Fitzgerald’s writings as part of the ongoing afterlife of the written word project.
