The POP Project delivers free books to benefit thousands of men, women, and schoolchildren each year. And we couldn’t make the impact that we do without the help of volunteers!
Each month, a handful of strangers meet up at POP’s warehouse space in Woodfin to work toward a common goal: sorting books in such a way that organizations can easily find the books they need. This month, five volunteers dug through a dozen boxes of books within an hour and half, while chatting and enjoying each other’s company.
We had four deliveries to prepare, as well, in addition to book sorting. More than $1,100 in books were double-checked for quality and need, and boxed back up for delivery to the Literacy Council, A-B Tech, Hominy Valley Community Market, and NC Department of Public Safety.
We want to thank Andy, Jim, Stephen, Molly, and Eric for all their hard work! Within a couple short hours, they made a significant impact to several hundred adults and especially children within our community.
What is Homeward Books?
Our monthly Homeward Books volunteer opportunities let single-day volunteers participate in the heart of POP’s book giving endeavors. Volunteers who have signed up via Hands On Asheville-Buncombe meet at our warehouse storage room to sort the incoming book donations and prepare them for future delivery. Literature lovers always enjoy finding a surprising unique title or classic edition of their favorite read as they sort the books.
Homeward Books is a Hands On flex project. This means that it is managed by a fellow volunteer, which is also in keeping with POP’s history as a 100% volunteer-led organization. That also means that the groups are kept intentionally small and the pace is set by each session’s participants.
Where Can You Sign Up?
If you want to volunteer without long-term commitments or getting (too) dirty, then Homeward Books may be a good fit for you. We still have several spots available for next month’s opportunity. But if you can’t make it in September, don’t fret—we meet each second Saturday throughout the year.
