The POP Project distributes free books to agencies and organizations in Asheville and WNC whose clients would benefit from a greater access to books. From low-income schools to shelters, churches, and detention centers, we’re there to provide greater access to books for anyone in need.
But we need help to organize and deliver those books.
POP is in need of a few enthusiastic, long-term volunteers to organize our donations of children’s and adult-level reading books and keep the process of distributing them flowing smoothly. Help us arrange regular deliveries with existing contacts and reach out to new agencies in the region. Sort, count, and deliver books that match those needs.
The donation manager schedule is part-time and extremely flexible. Initial contacts can be made by phone or online. Book sorting and organizing is done at our storage units (not air-conditioned or heated) and involves lifting up to 50 pounds. You would then deliver the boxes of books by your personal vehicle. Mileage outside of Buncombe County is reimbursed by gas card.
For our mission to be successful, we need someone with a flare for organizing who is comfortable communicating with other community organizations regarding their needs and to schedule the deliveries. We’re looking for volunteers who will represent the organization professionally and are independent thinkers and workers. Donation managers can focus on just children’s books, just adult-level books, or work with organizations in need of both.
Computer literacy and access is required for light record-keeping and social media. Comfort using a simple spreadsheet is helpful—we record how many books are delivered and to which organizations. The record keeping and related tasks can be done from your home or mobile device.
