There’s a new initiative in place at the POP Project. Through the month of June 2018, we’re collecting gently used Dungeons & Dragons manuals for local detention centers. Drop them in our donation box at the Wyvern’s Tale, 347 Merrimon Avenue, during regular business hours. We will deliver them to men and women in local detention centers this summer.
Why D&D?
Since 1974, the fantasy roleplaying tabletop game, Dungeons & Dragons, has inspired players to use their imagination to explore dungeons, solve puzzles, fight monsters, gather treasure, and mediate political situations. At its core, D&D is just a game, but in practice, players learn many valuable skills. Through their teamwork, “Dungeons & Dragons gives the players an avenue to improve skills such as reading and writing, basic mathematics, critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork that otherwise are lost in day-to-day life,” according to The Artifice.
For many incarcerated men and women, these are exactly the skills that need stimulated during their time behind bars. And they are the skills that will come most in handy upon their release.
Where will These D&D Manuals Go?
The POP Project is working on a new initiative to provide D&D manuals alongside our regular book donations to local detention centers. If the manuals are successfully received and used, we will expand the D&D program to other detention centers in the region.
Where can I Donate My Gently Used D&D Manuals?
If you have gently used Dungeons & Dragons manuals that you would like to pass along to new players, we would love to accept them! There are several convenient ways of donating your books, comics, and D&D manuals to POP:
1. Drop manuals off at the Wyvern’s Tale this June
During the month of June 2018, take your D&D manuals to the Wyvern’s Tale at 347 Merrimon Avenue in North Asheville. They have been kind enough to host a special dropbox for this initiative. While you’re there, explore their selection of hundreds of board games and roleplaying games, and check out their gaming space and tournament schedule.
2. Take small donations to a POP drop box.
The POP Project has several book donation drop boxes around downtown Asheville. These are perfect spots to leave a single or a handful of books and comics. POP’s drop boxes are available during the regular operating hours of the locations in which they are housed.

3. Contact POP about larger book/comic donations.
For moderate donations (more than one box and up to 150 books), POP prefers that you drop off books at our storage location. We’re also available to meet you at locations within Asheville city limits that are convenient to you. Reach out to POP at aPOPproject@gmail.com to coordinate a donation meet up.
