Do you read banned books? Do you feel they enhance your life?

You should join the POP Project and Zapow! Gallery this Friday from 5:30-8:00pm. We are recognizing National Banned Books Week by celebrating all the wonderful and contested books that have made an impact on our lives.

Banned Books Week 2014 highlights the literary merit and issues surrounding controversial comic books and graphic novels. For our local celebration, the POP Project is excited to be partnering with ZaPow!, the southeast’s premier illustration art gallery.

Come and enjoy local and regional illustrative art, free wine and light snacks, and discussions about your favorite challenged graphic novels and comic books. Have your picture taken in an interactive, themed photo booth with your favorite banned books. Grab your friends, dress up, or come as you are. Borrow one of our books, or bring your own.

RSVP on Facebook to show your support and let us know you’re coming.

Donations will be accepted for the photo booth. Light refreshments will also be served.

About Banned Books Week

Every year, hundreds of works from authors ranging from Dr. Seuss to Ernest Hemingway are challenged or banned from schools and libraries around the nation. Banned Books Week is a national, annual September event that promotes education over censorship and celebrates the freedom to read.

Books, graphic novels, and comics featured during the Banned Books Week have been challenged in communities around the country by parents, schools, community boards, and other organizations. Thanks to the efforts of booksellers, librarians, teachers, and community members, many book challenges have failed and the books have remained in circulation.
