4 Days to Go! POP is $1,061 from our Give!Local Fundraising Goal

give-local-2016The POP Project has been proud to participate as one of 47 local nonprofits in the Mountain Xpress’s second annual Give!Local fundraising program.

From November 1 through December 31, the Give!Local program connects local donors with local agencies that need local support. Thanks to generous donors like you, so far POP has raised $439 or 28% of our $1,500 Give!Local fundraising goal. With only 4 days remaining, we hope to meet that goal before the ball drops on New Year’s Eve.

Every dollar raised by POP translates to more than $10 in books delivered for free to children and adults in our community who have trouble accessing books inside or outside their home. We believe that a greater access to books is one important factor among many that helps individuals build and maintain their educational and financial independence and better contribute to the local workforce.

That’s why many of POP’s delivery locations are fellow Asheville area nonprofits. Since we were founded in 2009, POP has given to dozens of local agencies, including eight of our fellow Give!Local organizations:

  • Asheville Music School (2013)
  • Children First /Communities in Schools (2011–2016)
  • The Council on Aging of Buncombe County (2014–2015)
  • Eliada (2011)
  • Homeward Bound (2010–2016)
  • Irene Wortham Center (2015)
  • The Lord’s Acre (2015)
  • OurVoice (2011)

We’ve also worked with others, like the Asheville JCC, to collect books through book drives.

We’re very proud of our chance to supplement the missions of fellow WNC agencies who are working to better our community by bettering the lives of locals—one man, woman, or child at a time. Here’s what Emily Ball, Housing Services Director of longtime partner Homeward Bound of WNC, has to say about POP:

Many of our clients visit the [public] library to use their computers, but they’re often unable to check out books due to accumulated late fees or lost library cards. Because of the POP Project, they can take books from AHOPE [Day Center], and either bring them back, pass them on, or keep them for themselves. Reading provides a great escape from the grind of homelessness and can offer moments of peace in an otherwise turbulent experience.

At Homeward Bound, we fully believe that homelessness is a community-wide problem that requires a community-wide solution, and that the most effective way to solve that problem is for everyone in our community to play the part that’s best for them—we’re so grateful to the POP Project for doing exactly that!

Help the POP Project Raise $1,500 by December 31

Please help sustain POP through 2017 so that we can continue taking children’s books, adult fiction, history, cookbooks and more to fellow Give!Local nonprofits, as well as to dozens of other schools, organizations, and agencies in Asheville and across the region.

Make your donation today! If just 53 more people gave $20, we could reach our goal.
