We Want to Help 10,000 People in 2019!
Imagine overflowing school libraries and children with stacks of books filled with pirates, princesses, and endless possibilities. Imagine homes across our community with shelves of age-appropriate books that families read together in the evening. Imagine waiting rooms and salons and coffee shops and laundromats with selections of books you can peruse while you wait or take home for free.
Imagine the difference a regular access to books can make in the lives of everyone in our community.
At the POP Project, we understand that literacy is the key to facing the challenges of the future. When everyone has the same access to books, long-term literacy levels increase, graduation rates go up, area professionals become more successful, and our strain on local and state corrections systems decrease.
For 2019, the POP Project is more committed than ever to ensuring that all of the books we are entrusted with are used for constructive, personal expansion. This year, we want to impact the lives of 10,000 people in our community.

About POP’s “10 for 10” Book Giving Campaign
This fall, the POP Project is turning 10 years old—a huge milestone for a volunteer-led community nonprofit!
Instead of patting ourselves on the back and moving forward with business as usual, we had an idea: Why don’t we make 2019 our most ambitious year yet? Our mission is to spread the power and possibilities of literacy through a greater access to books. So, we want to impact more lives than ever before by delivering more books than any year in our history.
Help us impact 10,000 lives by delivering 10,000 FREE books before our 10th birthday!
The POP Project regularly gives to community organizations and literacy advocacy agencies in Buncombe and surrounding counties. This year, we aim to deliver MORE books to MORE organizations in MORE locations than ever before. And we need your help!
How You Can Help
There are many ways you can help POP with our “10 for 10” book giving campaign and see our vision of a greater access to books to fruition.
Help Us Find New Locations
POP currently gives to dozens of area organizations each year, including:
- Schools and educational programs.
- Shelters and day centers.
- Housing communities.
- Churches.
- Nonprofit and community organizations.
- Food pantries.
- Veterans facilities.
- Inmates in local and state corrections systems.
This year, we hope to deliver free books to more locations than ever in Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, Haywood, and surrounding counties.

See a Shelf? Let us know: When you grab your morning latte, have you noticed that your favorite coffee shop has a “take a book, leave a book” shelf? Have you spotted a stack of free books at your laundromat, dentist’s waiting room, or favorite brewery? We’re putting together a list of such places—Let us know!
Volunteer with POP
As a 100% volunteer-led organization, we can’t meet any goal without the help of many behind-the-scenes volunteers. We’d love to have your help on our “10 for 10” campaign!
Help Us Sort Books: Step one in getting more books out into the community is knowing what books we have available to give. Help us kickstart our giving by sorting through our incoming book donations. Sign up today: handsonasheville.org.
Help Us Deliver Books: Do you regularly drive from Asheville to Marshall, Hendersonville, or Waynesville? Are you available to pick up a few boxes of books and drop them off at a waiting organization? We’d love your help! Ask us about gas cards for drivers who make deliveries outside of Buncombe County.
Join POP’s Mission: Want to take your volunteering to the next level? We need several enthusiastic long-term volunteers to organize our book deliveries and keep the process of distributing them flowing smoothly. Check out the position: handsonasheville.org.
